Cottagers medical for Berbatov

Cottagers boss Martin Jol confirmed the Bulgarian striker, who he worked with during his time in charge of Spurs, was on course to join the West London club. Berbatov has become surplus to requirements for the Red Devils despite finishing as the joint top-scorer in the Premier League in 2010/11, with his appearances limited last term.

The summer signing of Robin van Persie joining the striking ranks alongside Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez made the 31-year-old's departure almost inevitable. Fiorentina looked to be leading the race for his services amid rival interest from Juventus, only for Berbatov to have a late change of heart.

Jol is keen to increase his attacking options and has money to spend following the ?15million sale of Belgium international Mousa Dembele to Tottenham earlier this week.
