"This is a big challenge for me and when the chance came about, I didn't think twice," he told the official Sunderland website.
"I had a choice between Fulham and Sunderland but when I spoke to the gaffer my mind was made up.
"I had a knack for scoring goals in Ireland and I have to continue that at Sunderland."
