Fabio Carvalho still expected to seal summer Liverpool transfer

Liverpool are still expected to sign Fulham starlet Fabio Carvalho once the summer transfer window opens, 90min can confirm.

The two teams were looking to seal a January deal which would have seen Carvalho remain at Craven Cottage on loan for the remainder of the season, but they could not finalise all the paperwork in time and the move collapsed.

A fee was agreed and Carvalho even underwent a medical in Liverpool, but the clock ran out on this deal.

The 19-year-old is now expected to leave Fulham on a free transfer in the summer, although whichever side that signs him will have to pay a compensation fee to the Cottagers as he is under 24 years old.

Sources have confirmed to 90min that Liverpool are still confident of signing Carvalho at the end of the season, while Fulham have all but accepted that the England youth international will end up at Anfield.

Negotiations between the two sides will continue and it is expected that they will agree on a compensation fee similar to the amount they planned to pay in January - believed to be under £10m - to avoid going to tribunal.

An agreement is likely to be announced before the end of the season and some sources close to the situation believe confirmation could come fairly soon, given the two sides already have the basics of a deal sorted out.

Carvalho is excited about the prospect of working under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and following the same path as former midfielder Harvey Elliott, who moved to Anfield in 2019 and looked set for a breakthrough season this year before a nasty ankle injury ended his momentum just four games into the campaign.

Elliott has now returned to training and impressed in a specially arranged behind-closed-doors friendly against Wrexham last week, boosting optimism that he could be available for Klopp's senior side in the near future.
