Fulham were still in the game at the half time interval despite trailing the hosts 1-0 but they rarely threatened in the second period and were eventually beaten 2-0 at St James Park.

"I thought in the first half we were very much in the game at one-nil down, but in the second half we didn't play well," Hodgson told Sky Sports.

"In the second half against the wind I didn't think we played as well.

"We were still in it with ten minutes to go, but when they got the second goal that killed any aspirations we had.

"We have got to keep playing and if we could play as well for 90 minutes as we did in the first half then we might have come away from here with a result.

"We have got to congratulate Newcastle for their victory in a game which meant a lot to both teams."
