Hodgson urges FA for long-term view

West Brom head coach Hodgson's name has been linked with the post this week after a series of fine victories, including last weekend's shock 1-0 success over Chelsea. Former FA chairman Lord Triesman has backed Hodgson, whose side visit Manchester United on Sunday, to succeed Fabio Capello.

But Hodgson hopes the four man FA board weigh up all the ingredients that will make a successful international manager and pay no attention to a few good or bad results. Hodgson said: "I think we are in a business when the person who happens to be in the ascendancy in a brief moment in time is going to be the name on everyone's lips."

He added: "That certainly wasn't the case for me during long periods of this year. Now we've had a couple of good results maybe my name is being thought of a little bit more highly.

"But I've got to say that jobs and judgements on people should go beyond whether you are on a winning run and losing run.

"If you are going to be in football for a long period of time you are going to have winning and losing runs, times when people are singing your name and days when singing someone else's name.

"If we are talking about top quality jobs in English football, including the actual England job, it will be a case for people to research the profile and the type of person they want to do the job.

"That should go beyond whether you have won or lost the last few games."

Hodgson is reluctant to make any comment on whether he would be interested in the England role unless he receives an actual approach from the FA.

He said: "You never rule yourself out of jobs you've never been offered and there is no point in speculating on jobs that may be available. This one is available but there is no point in speculating on your candidacy until someone approaches you and asks if you are interested."
