The 20-year-old midfielder is the son of Liverpool, Newcastle and England legend Terry McDermott and was hoping for some league experience at Swindon, after agreeing to move to the County Ground on loan.

Robins boss Andy King overlooked McDermott for the Walsall game though, and the youngster was not even on the bench.

After signing for Swindon, McDermott said: “I’m ready for the challenge and looking forward to it.

"I’ve come here to prove myself and to prove to the manager that I’m good enough to get in the team.

“The manager at Fulham wants me to progress.

"I can already see in training that it’s different from training with the reserves at Fulham.

“I’ve played in centre midfield, on the right, wherever the manager sees fit.

“I’ve played against the two lads at Manchester United (Colin Heath and Tom Heaton) when I was with Newcastle and I used to play with Patrick Collins at Newcastle.”

So is son a chip off the old block?

A slightly weary smile creeps across his face.

He said: “You’ll have to wait and see.”

On his new signing, King said: “He’s been given an opportunity.

"Fulham have allowed him to go out on loan.

“I’m a very good friend of his father’s and he asked me if I’d look at the situation.

"Fulham have helped us out and the deal was very favourable to us.”
