Managers give their views on abandonment

The abandonment of Saturday's game at Sunderland becuase of the inclement April showers had led to reasoned comments from the two managers.

Chris Coleman told the official Fulham website

"Well we wanted to play on of course, we were 1-0 up and playing very well but I can understand Mike Riley's decision, the conditions weren't getting better - they were getting worse. He's put the player's safety first and that's paramount.

"We were playing well and had a strong foothold on the game and looking for our first away win. When you're searching for that elusive away win you need a bit of luck and we didn't get that."

The abandonment saved Sunderland from being relegated for just a little while longer.

“Mike had no choice but to call the game off in the end,” said Kevin Ball. “I was standing in the technical area and at times I couldn't see across the pitch.

“I was getting pelted with – I don't know whether you would call it snow, ice or God knows what – but they were the biggest lumps I've ever been hit with.

“In the end, the safety of the players is of paramount importance, and it was getting to the stage then where I think he had no choice. I think he made the right decision.

“Chris (Coleman) and I had a laugh and a chat about it because he was 1-0 up, but he would have no complaints.

“Somebody said would I have felt upset if we were 1-0 up and the game was called off, and I have to say no.”

Unfortunately for Brian McBride his goal will be chalked off and not count.
