Mousa Dembele to retire at the end of 2022

Mousa Dembele is set to retire from football at the end of the 2022 Chinese Super League season, bringing an impressive career to an end.

Dembele is most fondly remembered for his time at Tottenham Hotspur, where he carved out a reputation as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League between 2012 and 2019. During this seven-year spell in North London, he made 249 appearances in all competitions and scored 10 goals, also helping to establish Spurs as a top four club.

He has played for Chinses side Guangzhou City, previously known as Guangzhou R&F, since leaving Tottenham in January 2019.

Dembele's current deal is set to expire at the end of this year and he was offered a fresh contract recently. However, the midfielder has since taken to social media to announce that he has rejected these fresh terms and will instead be retiring at the end of the upcoming CSL campaign.

"Hi everyone, first of all I would like to thank you for all the nice messages I have received. To clear up, I haven't stopped yet. I still have a year on my contract left. But I can already share I will stop my career after this year is finished," he posted on Instagram.

The 2022 Chinese Super League season is due to begin in April and will run to the end of the year.

As well as spending time with Tottenham, Dembele also enjoyed notable spells with AZ in the Eredivisie and Fulham. He also earned 82 caps for Belgium before retiring in 2019.
