Yossi Benayoun's late winner at Craven Cottage took Liverpool to the top of the table and two points clear of Manchester United who play Aston Villa on Sunday.

"In the first half Liverpool played very well and they created a number of chances, but in the second period we did much better," Hodgson said after the 1-0 defeat.

"We contained them much better so I am disappointed and frustrated to concede in the 92nd minute.

"It was a bitter blow after such a battling performance against an in-form side."
