Fulham's best chances all fell in the first half when with a little more steadiness in front of goal Luis Boa Morte could have sealed the tie as early as the 22nd minuteHis miss at that time when he got the ball wrapped under his legs from only five yards out cost Fulham dear as he connected with a cross from Steve Marlet.
Just before that Marlet had provided a first chance for Boa Morte with a cushioned header but the ball sat up and the shot was beaten away by the keeperÂ’s legs.
Alan Goma headed on to the bar from a Boa Morte corner, but finally Marlet had his own scuffed shot beaten away by Gabor Kiraly, diving to his left. As Boa Morte followed up there was a hint of handball but referee Collina waved away Fulham's half-hearted protests.
In contrast Hertha's most dangerous spell was in the last five minutes of the first half.
Rufus Brevett made a hash of a clearance and Marcelinho broke away to fire a 20-yard effort which needed Maik Taylor to dive full length to turn it around a post on the stroke of half time and the dangerous Brazilian hit the near post with an inswinging corner to wake Fulham up.
Sub Junichi Inamoto could have become a hero had he not skied his first touch of the ball from the edge of the box, but in truth Fulham had run out of ideas.
Right at the end Michael Hartmann was presented with two gilt-edged chances to kill the tie, but luckily for him it didn't matter as five minutes of added time failed to produce a goal.
