Fulham 3 - Bury 1

It was never likely to produce the upset that everyone had hoped for, where at times the fireworks outside the ground proved to be more entertaining then the football in it.

Fulham started the brighter of the two spraying the ball around the park with ease giving the visitors very few opportunities to get into the game. But to their credit the Third Division side limited the home side's efforts, as the Fulham faithful witnessed some woeful attempts at goal from Pierre Wome and Bjarne Goldbaek within the opening 20 minutes.

As the game progressed Bury grew in confidence, but failed to make any real impact in the final third.

With frustration mounting for the home side Andrejs Stolcers latched on to a superb Barry Hayles throughball to slot home after 40 minutes sparing Fulham's blushes.

The second half proved more fruitful for Jean Tigana's men, with Lee Clark dominant in midfield, and it was not that long before the home side pulled further ahead with a great solo effort from Stolcers.

With Tigana's men starting to show their supremacy substitute Facundo Sava missed a great opportunity when his effort looped over the bar from just five yards.

Shortly after, Bury came close to opening their account when Danny Swailes' looping header struck the Fulham woodwork.

However the home side put the final nail in Bury's Worthington Cup coffin when Clark struck a fine shot from the edge of the box which curled sweetly into the bottom corner to put Tigana's men 3-0 up after 70 minutes.

Despite the deficit Bury sparked a late revival when captain Jon Newby broke down the right flank cutting past two defenders to coolly slot home a consolation goal.

Newby's goal helped equal a club record of scoring in 18 consecutive games, but offered little consolation for their brave efforts.
