Chairman joins club v country debate

Fayed has written to the national associations that called up Fulham players for internationals this weekend telling them they should start paying compensation for using Premiership players in internationals.

He claims national associations use players solely for money-making ventures and should be forced to pay clubs for them.

Among the Fulham players who were called-up this week for international duty were goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar, defender Steve Finnan and winger Luis Boa Morte and Al Fayed is annoyed the Cottagers are paying the players' wages while they risk serious injuries playing for their countries.

He said: "That is not acceptable in today's economic climate. Between us we are pouring hundreds of millions of pounds into the infrastructure of our great game.

"Against that background it seems to me morally wrong that national associations can simply demand the use of players, free of charge and free of all risk, in order to generate income which they apply solely for their own use and purposes."
