"We were written off a long time ago.

"My neck was supposed to be on the block, there was talk about some of my coaching staff losing their jobs and also a new manager coming in.

"But, from within the camp, the chairman and the directors have always stayed strong and looked at the bigger picture. We always thought we would have a good finish."

"When you look at the bottom half of the Premiership, there are not many better players than Malbranque, Diop and Boa Morte.

"Yes, we could sell them and make a lot of money. But you have to draw the line somewhere. What is the point in just going round in circles?"

"Maybe I was the cheap option three years ago, I don't know," he said. "I was very inexperienced - I still am.

"I knew the spending had to stop. I had no problem with that. I have never complained about it and I am not complaining now.

"I am not talking about spending tens of millions, but if we are to progress, we need to spend just a little bit more than we have been."

"I am bitterly disappointed.

"Results have been poor over the past couple of months but, from my own point of view, I quite understood, both last summer and at Christmas, what was needed at this club. Maybe this run has focused the attention of one or two people outside my office.

"Maybe the players are feeling sorry for themselves. I feel sorry for them because we are going to have to start working - and I mean working."
