Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic scores 'worst goal of all time' in win at Huddersfield

While the Premier League season got underway this weekend, the Championship has rolled into matchday two already.

But fans of Huddersfield must be longing for the 2021/22 season to end as soon as possible.

The Terries were beaten 5-1 at home by promotion favourites Fulham, and yet Huddersfield will be making headlines beyond the scoreline after the calamity that ensued in the Cottagers' opening goal - which has been described on social media as 'the worst goal of all time'.

Huddersfield's Sorba Thomas attempted to keep the ball from going out for a throw-in by playing it back to goalkeeper Ryan Schofield. However, his momentum forced him to strike it full pelt, and so Schofield himself found it hard to keep the ball in play, mis-controlling the ball high into the air off his chest.

From there, he panics and immediately tries to hoof it away and into oblivion. Unfortunately, Schofield skews his strike and it looks as if it's heading into the path of Mitrovic.

With the goal gaping, Mitrovic desperately tries to get a solid contact on the ball, and ends up slipping into it. Still, it was enough to trickle across the line.

From there on in, it was a day to forget for Huddersfield. Josh Onomah and Fabio Carvalho scored either side of Matthew Pearson's consolation, but even after Harry Wilson's red card, Fulham managed to bag two more goals.

After a 1-1 draw with Wayne Rooney's Derby County - who have been in all sorts of off-field trouble recently - on the opening day, fans will have hardly been given a confidence boost after Fulham's visit to the John Smith's Stadium. Huddersfield's spell in the Premier League under David Wagner certainly feels like a long time ago.
